When I look back at all my Mom went through as a single parent in the 1970's ... I have a deeper appreciation for who I am and how I got here.
While brain science researchers have studied the trauma triggers that bring on the fight, flight or freeze response, I'm keenly aware of how the hardships my Mom faced triggered a "fight" response in me later in life.
I walked around with a hard shell and tough exterior ... despite really wanting to love on people.
The truth is I was simply terrified to get hurt.
Pretending I was strong and tough seemed to serve me well at various times in life, yet over the years it did more harm than good, pushing good people whom I deeply cared for away from me.
My fear of being vulnerable because it might make me look "soft" ...also had me become gifted at the art of sarcasm.
When I was angry, I had a look that felt like 1000 daggers just pierced your heart.
Coupled with silence ...
... well, let's just say those two things said more than my words ever could.
18 years ago, I founded Upside Thinking, an international leadership evolution organization, designed for leaders called to make a bigger difference in the world to have a confidential space to examine, evolve, and transform their thoughts, beliefs, ideas - and lives.
At the time, I didn't realize how much I needed my own programs.
While my clients got results early on, I thought I had to "get it right" 24x7, so I did my best to be perfect.
This got exhausting ...and my business stalled.
When you are able bring your humanity and experience to every conversation, you are powerful beyond measure.
I hired people smarter than me ...
... learned how to lower my defenses ...
... got real with myself ...
... and began showing up as Love.
The results?
~ Doors to BIGGER opportunities opened.
~ New friendships formed.
~ Amazing clients showed up.
And, I was finally at peace.
I still seek to improve every day ... just 1% better ... and it's the work I am honored to do with my clients.
Remember, the world needs you and your brilliance.
And no one goes it alone.
ACTION: The Upside Challenge of the week is to see if you are operating from a "hard shell" version of yourself or from your humanity and experience.
Notice each day how the way you are being has results you may never have expected.
