What Happens on the Inside Shows UP on the Outside

Why, when evolving into a leader worth following, it is important that you pay attention to what happens on the inside?
After returning from 10 days of speaking at the National Association of Women MBA’s, Play Bigger Now, the Society of Women Engineers and the Academic Leadership for Women Engineers conferences and events, I sat in my quiet place to reflect.
This trip was one of the easiest travel experiences I’ve had in 12 years.
And, because my travels have continued to get easier and easier over the past several years I wanted to examine why this was happening.
Was it as simple as an airline upgrade to first class and a great night of sleep at a four-star hotel?
Or, perhaps a meeting with the right people at the right time?
Or, was there something else to why this trip was so incredibly easy?
What I recognized was in the early days of Upside Thinking, Inc., I believed I had to push myself to the limit to succeed.
And, by the limit, I mean be on the verge of burnout where I looked healthy on the outside and was a hot mess on the inside.
I worked long hours and got a lot done – and I was often cranky to the people who loved me the most.
What Happens - Upside Thinking
Business was all about increasing revenues and serving as many people as possible.
And, while increasing revenue and serving others seems like they would be good outcomes, I want a life that is filled with ease and grace – where happiness, success, and meaning live in harmony.
The two myths I realize were running me into the ground were:
- Success has a destination.
- The only way to have success is to work harder.
-
Yet, my business is a reflection of who I am as a person.
In order for me to experience the ease and grace I want, I must be the kind of leader that leads with ease and grace.
What happens on the inside shows up on the outside.
When I was running around trying to get as much done as possible so I could win some imaginary game I was playing, I was exhausted and not very much fun to be around.
The fears and concerns that I was dealing with at a subconscious level were showing up in my interactions with colleagues, clients, and co-workers.
Your personal transformation is connected to the evolution of your business or career path.
By choosing to evolve into a leader worth following, you get more of what it is you seek.
- Because I’ve decided to create more spaciousness in my life, rather than filling up every moment with something to do, it’s allowed me to show up everywhere I go well rested. And, it’s allowed opportunities to unfold organically in my business. The right people have been showing up, AND I’m getting more done in less time because I have systems to support me. (How cool is that?!?)
- Because I’ve increased the intentionality of where I spend my time and who I spend time with, I’ve acknowledged how valuable my time is and created boundaries that serve me. And, it’s allowed me to stay in the flow of ease and grace where I get to have more fun with my clients because I only say “yes” to projects that are fun and joyful.
- Because I’ve chosen to deepen my relationship with God, I’ve gotten to practice presence throughout my day. And, it’s allowed deeper, more meaningful connection to others because of my ability to operate fully in mercy and love – and stay away from shaming, blaming, and complaining.
You can implement the most amazing business and career strategies, however, it will be impossible to achieve the results you want if you don’t continue to seek your own personal transformation.
Now, this doesn’t mean I don’t still have my moments.
Sheri and my husband still see me when I’m frazzled and unfocused.
Yet, these are moments, not how I live and operate.
This is because to live out your big mission, achieve your vision and be a leader worth following, you’ve got to spend twice as much time working on what’s happening on the inside vs. what you’re doing on the outside.

The Upside Challenge of the week is to examine the number of hours that you spend trying to implement a perfect strategy vs. working on yourself. Where do you need to make a change?
The world needs you and your brilliance.
Comfort doesn’t change the world.
Vulnerability changes everything.
