I’ve been interested in leadership for over two decades.
Learning more about what effective leaders do differently than the average person has been a personal passion.
Being successful as a leader is more than knowing what your talents, gifts, skills, and abilities are.
The most effective leaders know where their Achilles heel lies – their shortcomings and imperfections.
Thriving leaders know the value of surrounding themselves with people who see things differently and are strong enough to tell them “no”. (I get this a lot in my business from my team…..LOL.)
Most importantly, they understand that you can’t get it right 24/7, 365 days a year.
No one is that good.
No one is that, well, perfect.
And, yet, so often the idea of failing may make you incredibly uncomfortable that you’d rather do anything other than that.
Imperfection is part of leadership but not the part you probably talk about or think about.
When you describe the qualities of someone you admire, you think about what they do well – their strengths, not their limitations.
While you’re tossing and turning at night thinking about what you don’t ever seem to get right – your biggest challenges – these leaders are sleeping well.
Now, I know that being a better leader isn’t something that keeps you up at night, but I do know that you have a long list of imperfections that are often heavy on your mind.
– If only….
– Why can’t I…..
– When will I…..
Leadership is about influence. And, the people who have the greatest influence get that it isn’t a solo practice.
So, when you’re tossing and turning, remember that stepping up and being a leader just may be the answer.
CALL TO ACTION: The Upside Challenge of the week is to make a list of your top 10 talents, gifts, skills, and abilities and your top 10 biggest worries and challenges- what keeps you up at night. Then, read through both lists looking to see where the gap is. Finally, identify who possesses that skillset or talent that you can reach out to for mentorship or to hire and when you will do it. (Note: if it is for mentorship, remember to give something first!)
People follow the person first, then their great plan.
Be someone worth following.
Life is change. Growth is Optional. Choose wisely. Live Upside.
