When I moved to Miami five years ago, I didn’t realize the mix of heat and humidity would change my wardrobe choices.
Not one to have worn dresses or skirts at the time, I quickly realized that my layers of brown and cream-colored easy-breezy linen and silk tops and slacks were not going to work out here.
Over time, I built up a south Florida closet filled with bright colored sundresses to be admired.
However, there was a minor problem.
While the clothes I had were no longer relevant except in my travels, they were beautiful – and I struggled getting rid of them.
For years, I had a rule that when I bought something new, I would give away something that no longer worked for me.
That rule had been forgotten about and re-written once I arrived in Miami.
A few weeks ago, I decided to clear the clutter in my life, starting with my closet – and holy-schmoly was this a challenge.
I work with people who want to be seen and recognized for their talents. They’re tired of everyone else around them – people who are less passionate, and less knowledgeable — being rewarded.
In our work tougher, I have my clients go through an exercise in letting go of what is no longer serving them, starting with their closets.
This applies to opportunities in life, too.
If you don’t let go of something before you add something new, you will get overfull – like my closet.
And, if you’re not able to recognize what’s working for you and what’s not, it’s tough to be seen in an already cluttered workplace and marketplace.
If you fail to clear the clutter, how can you expect to have room for the spectacular opportunities that are waiting for you?!?
I think the reason it’s easier to stay right where you are is that you have to discern what is clutter and what’s worth keeping – in all areas of your life.
If you don’t take the first step because you’re worried you’ll make the “wrong” decision, you’ll stay exactly where you are – invisible.
The Upside Challenge this week is to examine the clutter in your life and get rid of what’s no longer serving you.
I guarantee you’ll feel lighter and the space you create will enable new opportunities to show up in ways you never thought were possible.
