When something works, force is unnecessary.
When something doesn't work, force won't help.
Tomorrow is my birthday – and I’ll be hosting the last Upside Retreat at Summit Hills farm for 2022.
One of the topics that is on display at my events is VULNERABILITY in LEADERSHIP --
-- and one of the biggest myths about this topic is that being STRONG requires FORCE.
When I worked in Federal law enforcement, there were lots of leaders who were physically strong...men and women who believed that commanding and controlling others contributed to their strength and power.
Heck, I fell into that trap early on, using profanity and talking to people in a way that wasn't resonant with who I am.
I didn't realize how ineffective until understanding how leadership really works. And today, I see "displays" of strength versus true power every day in business.
You see, TRUE POWER requires no force.
Power requires you to be PRESENT with and for yourself and others.
And that's HARDER TO DO than dressing someone down with your words will ever be.
When I became full present in body, mind, and spirit, I also was also exposed for the whole world to see. No longer hiding in any way.
And that's scary.
I thought people would run away from what I saw as the "junk in my trunk"...
the dark corners even I didn't want to look at.
The opposite happened... and BIGGER OPPORTUNITIES SHOWED UP in my Federal law enforcement career and later in my leadership coaching and consulting business.
I attracted contracts JUST BY BEING ME... without all of the filters and posturing, trying to prove that I was strong and tough.... a real "boss."
And some people feign vulnerability.
They don't even realize they're doing it.
Simply put, so many people have no clue who they really are.
Vulnerability isn't a marketing tactic. It's Courageous Leadership put into action.
And that's not something you can fake.
What is the biggest concern you've got with vulnerability in leadership?
Dig into that. There's gold in that answer...
Because TRUE POWER requires no force...
ACTION: The Upside Challenge for the week is to experiment with the difference between showing power versus being powerful.
Outward displays versus standing confidently in your unique power and being fully present.
Notice how people respond differently in each scenario.
