Slowly, I walked into my supervisor’s office, not sure what to expect.
To my surprise, he didn’t look angry.
“Go make it right.,” were the words he spoke firmly, yet with kindness.
He got that I would punish myself greater than he ever could
for making that mistake … when I was on probation starting my career in the United States Customs Service.
While many years ago, I remember feeling the shame from screwing up that day while on temporary assignment at the Contraband Enforcment Team.
Because of walking on eggshells at home because of a violent and explosive stepfather, I was used to harsh punishments -- and waited for a long time to walk into my supervisors office to tell him what I had done.
Afraid of losing my job, or to me worse having him reem me out in front of my colleagues, I stood in front of his door petrified to share that I had accidentally sent our law enforcement intel to one of the steamship companies.
Getting that second chance was a turning point in my life.
I never forgot his act of kindness … and made the commitment to do better – and extend grace to others.
Leadership.
Being human means there are going to be days when you
need a second chance.
There will be moments when you need to extend mercy and graciousness to others because of their failings.
When someone is compassionate to you, you’re more likely to extend the same to others.
The best leaders reframe … and let it go.
When you’re tested or trying something new,
there’s got a higher probability that you’ll make a mistake.
How you handle yourself after a misstep is what matters most.
Some folks see it as a failure …
The best leaders get it’s just information.
When you look at it from this lens … you get an educative experience ... that builds confidence and competence.
Perhaps that's why my leadership training and and coaching often includes forgiveness work.
Humans are designed for safety and self-preservation, yet you only get to happiness, success and meaning by taking a risk and exposing your frailties to others.
ACTION: The Upside Challenge of the week is to ask yourself where you need a second chance in your life right now.
And, who in your life do you need to extend a second chance to right now?
The world needs you and your brilliance.
