The Satisfaction of Celebrating Small and Big Wins

Celebration is a habit to be cultivated. Here’s a simple practice to begin the art of celebrating wonderful you – and your life. Feel the satisfaction of celebrating.
Growing up, I was fortunate to have a big extended family who liked to get together.
Birthdays, Christmas, Memorial Day, you name it – and we all got together over great food and a keg of beer.
There was lots of laughter, games, and kids running everywhere.
Some of my most favorite memories are with family celebrating something or someone.
Yet, when I went into the workforce, the act of celebrating me was much more difficult than celebrating an event or someone I love.
In fact, if someone had a conversation at that time about the art of celebration, I would have looked at them as if they had two (2) heads.
Give me a task and I tackled it.The Satisfaction of Celebrating
Tell me something needed to be done and I was on it.
But, pause to see what I had done – and celebrate it – this was foreign to me.
It was easier to see all of the things I wasn’t getting done vs. acknowledging just how much I accomplished each day.
I realized celebration is a habit to be cultivated when it comes to celebrating me.
I’m always my toughest critic and find that acknowledging the good I’ve done takes intention and effort.
Sometimes it’s easier to receive criticism than it is to be celebrated. (That’s a whole other topic for a different article…..)
After practicing the act of celebration for many years with different tools, I’ve noticed the benefits of growing this practice – and some of the most successful entrepreneurs I know have a celebration or gratitude ritual.
Leadership Pillar #5, the pillar of Presence, includes an element of this and I speak about it at Design Your Destiny Live on the last day.
If you look at your own life and feel as if there is little to celebrate right now, I promise that the consequences are diminished self-esteem, lack of confidence, and apathy so you may want to give it a try.
If you look at your own life and feel as if there is much to celebrate right now, but find little time to put it into practice, I promise that the positive effects are extraordinary.
The Satisfaction of Celebrating
You’ll need a new journal or notebook and a pen.
Every night, write three (3) things that happened during the day that you want to acknowledge yourself for doing, thinking, or being.
Ideally, these are three things that you’d like to see happen in your life again and again.
Wherever you are right now, I promise that you are worth celebrating.
If you think you have to cure world hunger or climb Mount Kilimanjaro (like one of my clients) to have something that qualifies, here is what is on my list:
- Got my inbox down to 5 emails (actually, that was like climbing Mount Kilimanjaro….)
- Called my Mom to having her and my Dad visit over Easter (and it’s been on my list for weeks)
- Wrote 3 Upside Thoughts and sent them to Sheri to schedule
-
What is important about this practice is that you begin collecting a record of your small wins that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.
Over time, you will have bigger successes to write down as you become a notice and get clearer about where you’re spending your time and energy.
This simple practice will enable you to see and acknowledge all that you’re doing vs. putting the energy and focus on what you’re not.
Action Item: The Satisfaction of Celebrating
The Upside Challenge of the week is to purchase or find a new journal or notebook and pen – and commit to this practice for at least one (1) month.
The world needs you and your brilliance so shine on!
