“No matter how many mistakes you make or how slow your progress, you are still way ahead of everyone who isn’t trying.” One of my favorite Tony Robbins quotes, it’s become a sacred phrase for me.
You probably prefer to talk about wins than losses. You rather talk about successes than failures. And, you’d rather speak about how you got it right than talk about your mistakes. But, if you’re human (and I’m guessing you are) then you make mistakes.
Whew! So do I.
Great leaders understand that it’s not whether you make them but how you deal with them when you make them – and what lessons you learn.
When I was working for the Contraband Enforcement Team in the United States Customs Service less than 6 months on the job and still on probation, I made a MEGA mistake. I knew enough to own up to it and went to my supervisor explaining how I had just screwed up royally.
While I cannot share the specifics, I will share that it had to do with disclosing details about a possible drug shipment to the wrong people. (Not exactly a minor misstep….) Fortunately, the supervisor was a great leader who understood that mistakes can be the stepping-stones to success and everyone makes them. He thanked me for letting him know, told me that almost anything I did could be fixed, and not to do it again.
Whew! What a great lesson. While this was a big mistake, few mistakes are ever fatal. If you’re out there making mistakes, know that you’re ahead of those who are afraid to try. And, know that they can be your greatest teachers, too.
ACTION ITEM: The Upside Challenge this week is to examine how you treat yourself when you make a mistake. Do you beat yourself up? Do you look for the lesson? Do you move on or drag the burden with you wherever you go?
The biggest mistake you will ever make is being afraid to make one.
