This is my childhood in a nutshell.
Or, at least how I remembered it.
There were more moments of kids laughing at me, not with me, than I care to remember.
And, while I wanted to be accepted, I simply wasn’t invited in.
You may have experienced this, too – or know someone who struggled with fitting in.
What’s interesting to me today is watching how the people and location may change but the same wounds come up for most people throughout their lives, including my own.
In the leadership book, What The World’s Best Leaders Do Differently, the authors give a list of 12 questions that are critical to the growth of an organization.
One of them is “Do you have a best friend at work?”
On the surface, it seems like a silly question that would have no place in a book on leadership and top performance.
……..if you forget our basic human desires to be included and accepted.
Not being “in on things” is one of the top reasons why exceptional employees leave their job.
Then, that best friend steps in with a few magic words of reassurance and now you’re back to being whole.
I want to show up as that friend today.
And, here are the magic words I want to share – and invite you to pass on, too.
I know it doesn’t seem like much but if you’ve ever heard any of those phrases, then you know how important they are to hear.
“You’re amazing” instills hope and joy into a person’s heart. The world is often telling you how you fall short and what you need to do to improve. What a beautiful gift to tell someone how you see their brilliance.
“I’m listening” reminds someone that their voice matters and they are heard.
“I’ve been there, too. What can I do for you?” gently let’s your friend know that we all have a story that includes having our heart trampled on. Even tough guys.
