The world is made for those who stand out, not those who fit in.
That’s my core message and personal mantra.
As someone who has typically felt more relaxed blending in and incredibly uncomfortable standing out, I spent a lot of my life dimming my own light.
I would make myself small so others would feel bigger.
And, it never served me – or the people who needed my talents, gifts, and abilities either.
So I decided to claim who I am and recognize that there will be people who love and appreciate me – and their will also be haters.
Working in law enforcement on the piers in Newark, New Jersey, I stood out. (It may have had something to do with my long blonde hair and red, white, and blue nails….)
I tried hard to prove that I was as good as the men I worked with when I first started that I changed my behavior to act like them.
Over time, I realized that being a woman was wonderful and allowed me to see and do things differently – to offer a perspective that was unique and brilliant – than my male counterparts.
Olympic track star Alysia Montaño, who set a US record in the indoor 600 meters event last year, wears a flower in her hair during every race.
Growing up and racing against boys in her neighborhood, she started wearing a flower to remind them that they were being beaten by a girl.
When she was interviewed, she said, “The flower to me means strength with femininity. I think that a lot of people say things like ‘you run like a girl’. That doesn’t mean you have to run soft or run dainty. It means that you’re strong.”
Know that this message is for men as well because being a man in today’s world can be tough, too.
The point is that the world is made for those who stand out, not those who fit in.
And, if you aren’t willing to claim the talents that are uniquely yours, the world suffers.
CALL TO ACTION: The Upside Challenge this week is to come up with the top 3 things that make you unique and special – and share them with 5 people. Yes, 5 conversations sharing that you’ve been challenged to talk about what you do differently than the people around you.
People follow the person first, not their great plan.
Be someone worth following.
