About 20 years ago, I heard the timeless story of the “Abilene Paradox.”
And, with all of the talk of colder temperatures it seemed like the perfect time to imagine stepping into a warmer climate.
Here’s the story —
“The temperature was 100 degrees, and the humidity was over 90% one steamy August afternoon in central Texas.
Six people were sitting on a porch when the conversation turned to “what to do”.
After a brief dialogue, the group piled into the family sedan without air-conditioning heading for Abilene, a small town about 100 miles away.
They decided to go for ice-cream and as they traveled on unpaved roads in the soupy weather, dust from the road blew through the open windows sticking to their sweaty skin.
As they continued along the drive, each wondered “whose dumb idea was it to go to Abilene.”
The trip back provided little relief.
They became more agitated as they returned home.
Each person was having the same conversation in their mind — “Whose dumb idea was it?” to go to Abilene.
Their thoughts increased to a roar as they sweated and the ice-cream melted, adding an extra layer of stickiness to the coat of dust.
When they arrived home they piled out of the vehicle quickly.
Immediately they started finger pointing.
In the end, they all realized that no one had wanted to go.
They each had gone along for the ride, thinking it was a dumb idea but not wanting to say so.”
How many trips to Abilene have you taken?
This story was a wake-up call for me.
At the time, there was a familiarity to the ending of the story for me — until I learned how to stand up and speak up for what I want.
You see, the secret to life is knowing what you want and being willing to ask for it.
Sometimes that involves saying “No” despite what everyone else around you is doing.
CALL TO ACTION: The Upside Challenge for this week is to identify if this is a familiar part of your own story. Have you ever taken a trip to Abilene? Is it a place you go to often? And, if the answer is “yes”, what are you willing to do about it?
When you know who you are and what you want – and operate in the space of doing everything you can to get it — it’s incredible how that clarity will begin bringing opportunities into your realm of possibility.
