With six weeks into the New Year and the excitement of new beginnings fading further from our memory, it’s easy to slip back into your same ‘ole life and the pattern of doing what is comfortable.
See, you probably know that comfortable won’t get you where you want to go but it’s well, comfortable.
And, so you get yourself into the rut of doing the same things you’ve been doing – and if they would have worked, you’d already be where you wanted to be.
Ouch.
Painful but true.
Even taking action – if it isn’t the right action – won’t get you where you want to be at the end of the year.
At my sister’s wedding last week, the sermon was about taking risks – the risk of choosing to be in a relationship, the risk to love someone, and the risk of being vulnerable.
When I think about life and business, the message is the same.
It’s easy to stay in ankle-high water and wade around telling yourself that the things you’re doing will get you where you want, but the gold and bounty is reserved only for those who are willing to go in the deep and take the big risks.
It’s easy to start grumbling and complaining about what’s missing in your life rather than to truly examine how you got to where you are.
Feeling incredibly uncomfortable where the actions you take make your palms start to sweat, and feel weak in your knees is just the bodies reaction to you stepping out of your routine.
You may be hungry to succeed right now, but are you taking the actions that will get you where you want to go?
Here is one of my favorite stories about realizing what is most important on your journey.

“A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream.
The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food.
The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman if he could have it.
She gave it to him without hesitation.
The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune.
He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime.
But a few days later he came back to return the stone to the wise woman.
“I’ve been thinking,” he said, “I know how valuable the stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious.
Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone.”

Ah, happiness, meaning, and peace.
When I was conducting interviews to build my 7 Pillars of Leadership, it was what was within that shone brightly and I found difficult to capture.
I’ve coached multi-million dollar entrepreneurs, new start-ups, seasoned executives, and non-profit leaders. They’ve lived on different continents and had varying socio-economic and cultural backgrounds and all wanted the same thing –happiness, peace, and meaning even if they didn’t say so.
And, each one of them took BIG, earth-shattering, financial and relational risks to get to where they wanted to be because they knew what was truly valuable.
What is the precious stone in your life? Would you be able to give it away with such ease and grace?
As I said before, you may be hungry to succeed right now, but are you taking the actions that will get you where you want to go?
If you said “No” to any one of these questions, what are you going to do about it – and when?!?
(I had someone call me last week who said I’ve had your card on my desk to speak to you about coaching for eight (8) months!!! The good news is that he took action and is now on track.)
As you proceed through the new year, my wish for you is to be able to share that which is most valuable in your life and do it with peace and gratitude, knowing it will bring you more than you ever expected in return.
And, that you be willing to get out of your comfort zone and take the necessary risks to get you where you want to be by the end of the year.
See Upside. Be Upside. Live Upside.
