In a week when we celebrate Independence Day in the United States of America, I thought it was appropriate to write about difference making.
My first book, Designing Your Destiny, has a starfish displayed prominently on the front cover.dyd button 2 (Click Here to order your copy!)
The original story of the starfish that inspired this design was by Loren Eisley, and goes like this:
“One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.
Approaching the boy, he asked, ‘What are you doing?’
The youth replied, ‘Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.’
‘Son’, the man said, ‘don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make a difference!’
After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf.
Then, smiling at the man, he said, ‘I made a difference for that one.’
Sometimes we under estimate our incredible ability to make a difference to just one person.
The Upside Challenge this week is to determine how you will make a difference – and then to take action.
Smile at a stranger.
Pick up the phone and call a loved one.
Write a note to someone with whom it has been way too long since you’ve connected.
Do something nice for yourself.
Whatever it is, know you will not pass this way again.
Be the difference in someone’s day.
Be the difference in someone’s week.
Be the difference maker in their life.
See Upside. Be Upside. Live Upside.
