I happen to be one of those people who enjoys the magic of Disney.
Visiting what is dubbed “The Happiest Place on Earth” suits my Upside self, and I find myself giddy with excitement as I stroll through the park anxiously waiting in line for the next attraction.
While I liked all of the characters as a kid, I recently read a story about Tinker Bell that resonated with me.
In the story, Tinker Bell is disappointed to learn that she is a tinker fairy, a fairy who fixes and builds things.
Even though everyone can see that she’s gifted at tinkering, she wants desperately to do something more exciting, more fun with her life.
At one point she says, “Look. You all do things that are beautiful and magical and . . . and important. But me . . . there’s gotta be more to my life than just pots and kettles. All I’m asking you is that you give me a chance.”
It takes her a while to figure out what’s clear to everyone else.
Eventually, Tinker Bell realizes that when she’s tinkering that she’s truly in her element.
Sometimes I feel a bit like Tinker Bell.
For most of my life, I’ve fought who I am.
It never seemed quite, well….enough.
I watched in awe and wonder at different kids in grade school, high school, and college wanting someone else’s life.
I envied people who were smarter, more athletic, less awkward, prettier, etc., etc., etc.
And just like in this movie, that refusal to accept myself wasted a lot of time and energy in my life.
I’ve had to learn over and over again, that I am perfect just the way I am, ever evolving, and always right where I am supposed to be.
So, the Upside Challenge this week is to see your talents, opportunities, and gifts.
The ones that were uniquely given to YOU – and you alone.
I know. I’ve been there.
Sometimes, they just don’t make sense. They’re not fun enough, fancy enough, or exciting enough.
But, if you just sit back, take a deep breath and think about Tinker Bell, you just may find that you’re exactly what the world needs.
See Upside. Be Upside. Live Upside.
