Have you ever held yourself back?
You recognize you’re stuck … yet, you’re afraid to ask for help, feeling you should have things figured out by now?!?
I understand as that used to be me .
I would beat myself up inside because I felt I wasn't smart enough to know how to grow my business.
And that’s how Annabelle and I met.
After delivering a keynote for a national organization she was a member of, Annabelle waited to speak to me.
There is often a line of people wanting to connect after I present and after 10 minutes, Annabelle talked herself out of her question, and left the room.
About 30-minutes later, I walked in the women’s restroom and recognized her.
“Weren’t you standing in line to ask me a question?”, ... I inquired.
She said, “Yes … and I chickened out.”
Curious, I asked her what I could do for her and we ended up in a l-o-n-g conversation about where she was in her business at the moment.
See, Annabelle believed that good things were meant for other folks and not for her.
She had an old tape in her head that she wasn’t good enough and it played loudly on a daily basis.
And although her business grew from 5-figures, to 6-figures, to 7-figures, Annabelle still struggled to see herself as the leader of the organization.
She didn’t feel worthy to do what she was doing …felt like a phony ... and had programmed 'hard' into all areas of her life .
She also thought she had to go it alone and rarely asked for help.
Annabelle knew all too well how lonely it was at the top.
Because I understood how she felt, I offered to have a longer conversation
just to lend a listening ear.
When I was working as a new supervisor in the government, I would often tell my best friend that someday they’re going to find out I’m a fraud and take my promotion away from me.
Looking back, I can now see how ridiculous that was.
My business coach says that, “NOBODY would accomplish anything daring or great or start a business or a church or start a band or a restaurant or invent anything.
Nobody would take charge of any job they weren't already qualified to do.
Cuz hardly any of us are qualified when we start.
That mountain IS bigger than you. It is bigger NOW. It won't be LATER.
Because YOU are going to grow.
EVERY GREAT PERSON IN THE WORLD, IF THEY ARE HONEST WITH THEMSELVES, feels like a fraud. At least for a while. "
You've got to step up and ask for help.
Annabelle decided to hire me and her business is thriving.
She's created ease in her processes and just got a legacy award for her leadership.
Her inner game now matches her external one and she's got a whole team of leaders around her that have her back.
Yet, it all started with her willingness to ask a question .
One question.
What question do you need answered right now that would propel you in an entirely different direction?
All you need is the courage to ask.
ACTION: The Upside Challenge of the week is to write down the one question that would make a positive difference in your life right now.
Then reach out to someone you trust and ask it.
Be courageous enough to get the support you need.
That’s great leadership.
