Unshakeable peace + Unconditional love. That’s what I want in my life at all times.
Regardless of what’s going on around me, I choose to be relaxed and present.
Lately, that’s been increasingly challenging for many reasons.
With the swirl of current events, many people around me have commented,
“How do you stay Upside?” even in the face of doom and gloom.
“How have you kept yourself from coming undone or being thrown off balance?”
There’s a story I heard about 10 years ago that I love to presence this.
Back in the late 1800s, there was a farmer who had worked his crops for many years.
One day, his son left a gate open and his 3 horses ran away.
Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit. “Such bad luck,” they said sympathetically.
“Maybe it is. Maybe it isn’t,” the farmer replied.
The next morning the horses returned, bringing with them 40 other wild horses.
“How wonderful!” the neighbors coming to see exclaimed.
“Maybe it is. Maybe it isn’t,” said the farmer.
The following day, his son tried to ride one of the untamed horses and was thrown off — and broke his leg.
The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy on his misfortune. “This is terrible news,” they said.
“Maybe it is. Maybe it isn’t,” answered the farmer.
The day after, military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army.
Seeing that the farmer’s son’s leg was broken, they passed him by. The neighbors congratulated for his good luck.
“Maybe it is. Maybe it isn’t,” said the farmer.
The moral of the story is that no event by itself can be judged as bad or good.
Time is like a tapestry and each moment is but a single thread and stitch. Ultimately, the picture will be revealed as will what ultimately happens.
It is a waste of time to cast judgment on a situation.
I prefer to live into the quote from The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, “Everything will be all right in the end so if it is not alright it is not the end.”
So, stay calm and carry on.
To do this, I like the SNAP technique. (If you’ve ever seen Legally Blonde, you’ll understand why I love this acronym. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OViadirUIp8 )
STOP. Every hour, stop for 2 – 3 minutes to give full attention to whatever is happening at that moment. Take 4 – 5 deep prayerful breaths to return to the present moment.
NOTICE. When you come to a full stop, you have the ability to notice what’s going on around you. Is the environment a hot mess or are you feeling calm? Are you stuck in a pattern that is outdated, or are you in a good place? Are you noticing obstacles and problems or blessings and opportunities? Are you noticing too many things at once or working on projects one at a time? At this moment, you can choose to stay where you are or begin to shift. Whatever you discover, be compassionate with what you’re feeling, thinking or doing. Your job is simply to notice.
ASK. Ask yourself 3 questions, “What am I believing right now?” It’s amazing what may come up. Not doing enough. Not getting it right. Not having results you want NOW. Feeling challenged to ask for help – and realizing you need it. “Are these beliefs true?” Usually, they are rooted in an old story. “How would my life change if I let go of this belief?”
PIVOT. Once you identify a false belief(s) or feeling, you can pivot and make different, healthier choices that are in alignment with truth. Do this by 1st taking a deep breath. Pay attention to the air flowing through your nostrils, going down into your belly, and rising back out of your body. See how you’re able to shift your energy.
When you focus on your problems and how much pain they are causing, negative feelings will grow.
By choosing to find the good, you will find the gift in the moment.
Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your character, your character becomes your destiny.
You have the power within you to choose the Upside regardless of what is happening.
You can create harmony within your circumstances.
ACTION: The Upside Challenge of the week is to find the upside as much as possible!
Notice how it affects your mood, energy level, and your effectiveness.
The world needs you and your brilliance.
