When your leadership helps others to express their emotions and stand in their power you need a good support system. Do you have the support you need?
Over the summer, I lead a private client retreat that stretches me beyond my growth edges.
The work I do with my clients at my 3-day “Seize Your Spotlight” retreat goesUpside-Thinking-Have the Support You Need beyond the intellectual work of leadership or teaching them how to position themselves as a trusted expert.
When I reflect at the breakthroughs and insights that happen when I facilitate an event like this, I’m in awe at the courage that it takes to show up fully.
It’s my role as the facilitator to create a safe space for the deep and meaningful work as it takes courage for a participant to step beyond their existing limits, patterns, and beliefs.
Clients laugh and cry in celebration as they choose to let go of what is no longer serving them and often actively step into a bigger vision of who they are called to be.
Six months later, I find that clients still bring up their triumphs and how much of a shift this experience has created in their life and business.
For a few of them, the results have been stratospheric in terms of influence, income, and opportunities.
As I’m planning for this retreat in 2017, I realize that I give a lot of myself during this event and what gives me the ability to do this without being depleted at the end of the 3 days is the support system that I’ve created.
When you serve as a container for others to express their emotions and stand in their power, there is usually a breakdown before a breakthrough.
People can get angry, upset, or fearful when who they have been is being challenged.
And, I get it.
Been there and done that.
In fact, just a few years ago, one of my mentors challenged me in a way that rocked me to my core.
It took me six months to walk through the fire and admit that I was hiding out and intentionally pushing people away.
Ouch.
Have the Support You Need
When you do this work, you never know what will show up which is another reason that I deeply admire my clients.
So, back to my support system…
What I’ve learned in doing this work is to ensure I have a plan to take care of me before, during, and after the event.
This plan includes great food, movement, rest, time off, and sleep.
I used to think that overfull days was the best way to serve my clients.
As I pushed myself to the limits, I would crash and burn after the retreat – and years ago so would my clients.
Now, I can say that this support system coupled with boundaries and pampering serves my clients, my team, and me.
As I get ready for Design Your Destiny Live™ in just a few short days, this support system is front and center in the planning of every aspect of the event.
Ultimately, the work you do in the world should bring out the best in you, not the stressed in you.
Action Item:
The Upside Challenge of the week is to examine what support system you have in place. Where do you need more help?
People follow the person first, then their great plan.
Don’t be so depleted that you’re not worth following.
The world needs you and your brilliance.
