I have a belief that everyone has three words that they have been given that show up throughout the events of their life.
While what I want people to feel and see when they are in my presence is love, I don’t believe that is one of my words.
Because of an internal knowing that I cannot explain, I believe that one of the words I have been given is courage.
Growing up, being courageous was one of the last words I would have ever used to describe myself.
I was afraid of who I was, afraid of being seen, afraid of being myself, afraid of not fitting in, afraid of being uncool, afraid of ….and the list goes on and on.
While I was uncomfortable with me, I was comfortable being at home or at my grandparents.
My sister and I would play games in the backyard, watch TV, or play cards just about every day.
One of my favorite TV movies was The Wizard of Oz. My little sister Pamela and I watched it every time it was on television.
I remember dressing up for Halloween to go trick-or-treating as Glinda, the good witch. And, my sister had a Dorothy dress and a basket for Toto complete with a stuffed dog that looked just like the one in the movie.
What drew me in to the Wizard of Oz tale wasn’t the story of Dorothy. It was the idea that this all-knowing and all-powerful wizard had the ability to give gifts to people to fill in the qualities or traits that seemed to be missing.
And, I wanted that for me.
A fear-buster.
Yet, there was the realization that I had even as a kid watching the movie over and over again that the wizard really was a fraud — not just in the movie but in real life.
While I didn’t understand why at the time, today I realize that it’s because nothing is ever really missing.
What the wizard did was enable people to see what they couldn’t see in themselves.
The cowardly lion was courageous all along — only he couldn’t see it.
That’s how I feel about my life when I look back at the trauma and tragedies I’ve encountered.
When I share my story with my closest friends and UPside community, people always say the same thing, “I don’t know how you survived that.”
While I want to say, “Me, either.”, it’s simple.
Courage.
And, today in my work as a leadership coach working with high-performance leaders I’m a bit like the wizard giving my clients the badge of courage…..seeing for them what they cannot always see for themselves. I invite them to borrow my belief in them because there are people out there who need their brilliance.
As Anais Nin said, “Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.”
And, the world really does need you and your brilliance.
So, put on your badge of courage and get out there because there are people who need you and your unique talents, gifts and abilities.
Action Item:
The Upside Challenge is to identify where you need to have more courage to step up and stand out — because the world is made for those who stand out, not those who fit in.
