My uncle Johnny, my mother’s youngest brother, is mentally disabled. At least that’s the socially proper way of saying it nowadays. He lived with my grandparents for most of his life, and since I spent lots of time at their home growing up, I also spent lots of time interacting with Johnny. As a kid, I wasn’t thrilled with the experience and would sometimes be embarrassed by his behavior when we were in public.
Today, I realize what an amazing privilege it was to grow up with Johnny.
He introduces himself to everyone he meets. He oozes with genuine excitement for the simplest things in life. He embraces life with a passion that is awe-inspiring.
When I connect with him today, I am reminded of where my compassion has come from as every interaction tugs on my heart. One of the greatest lessons in life that still comes from Johnny is to be present.
There is a task-oriented piece of me that wants to be efficient and focused and heaven forbid – waste time. With Johnny, it’s about embracing every moment. He wants you to notice him. He will acknowledge you and see you for who you are. The greatest lessons we learn often come from experiences we never wanted.
And, some of the greatest teachers come from the most unusual places.
