Three years ago, I recognized that my presentations had become boring. While I couldn’t tell you what I needed to do to fix it, I knew that something was wrong. The delivery of my material felt was uninspiring and rote – and my friends commented on it. In a conversation with one of my mentors, I recognized that I had become a talking head, disconnected from the passion and emotion of my work. But, now that I knew what the problem was, how was I going to resolve it?
In my 20’s and 30’s, I loved to dance. I would go to clubs and move and shake my booty. (…because it’s all about that bass, no treble….) And, at my annual Leadership Success Summit, there have always been dance breaks because the more you can get out of your head and into your body, the more knowledge you’ll retain.
Last year, one of the attendees and I had a conversation a week after the event and he admitted that while he was leery of the dancing, he retained more than at any other event he’d ever attended. (Woo-hoo!) Even though I knew this, I recognized that I had lost my connection with my own body. Information needs to be conveyed in a way that is wholly aligned with who you are – and I was not in alignment.
In honor of July being Dance Appreciation Month, I want to share with you how dance not only enabled me to reconnect with my own passion but it has been something that has literally saved my cousin’s life. When Courtney was three years old, she was diagnosed with Mitochondrial Metabolic Disorder. This means her liver shuts down on a moment’s notice and she dehydrates quickly.
When she’s dancing, she comes alive. Despite several surgeries, dance has helped her bounce back physically and mentally. You can read more about her story here.
Along the way, most adults lose the connection with their body and become talking heads.
The 5th Pillar of Leadership that I teach is to create a meaningful and memorable presence. When you speak from your head, heart and body, you create a powerful connection that inspires others to take action.
ACTION ITEM: The Upside Challenge of the week is to get up from your desk and break out into dance at least once a day this week.
People follow the person first, then their great plan.
Be someone worth following.
Be more than a talking head..;)
