I hope you had a beautiful and blessed Easter and happy Passover if you were celebrating.
This weekend was the 1st time my family came to visit over a holiday since we were married 9 ½ years ago. It was a delight to entertain, connect, and reminisce.
When I teach my clients how to be seen, heard, and rewarded from their boss, and/or clients, one of the tenets I cover is the power of connection.
Connection is a funny thing.
It sounds simple so you may think you don’t need to learn how to do it.
You may even be thinking, “I got this, Lisa Marie. Easy Peasy.”
I mean, how hard can it be to make a connection, right?!?
Well, positioning yourself and being seen as an expert is centered around whether people like you.
And, they can’t like you unless they’re connected to you.
Years ago, I was the world’s worst connector.
I was uncomfortable in my own skin and pushed people away unintentionally.
I studied how to connect – and now I’ve built a pretty incredible Upside community with what I’ve learned. (Cool, huh?)
Being able to strike up a conversation with someone and be in tune with who they are is a habit that takes practice.
The good news is you can practice it anywhere – standing in line at the grocery store or a performance, to the taxi driver on the way to the airport, or on the phone when you’re ordering something online.
Making connections doesn’t even have to involve deep conversations; it’s simply being open to the opportunity of getting to know people.
So, ask yourself right now, “Are you open to connecting?”
In today’s world, connection is a form of currency and if you are serious about creating opportunities for yourself, you’ve got to be open to others.
One of the greatest connectors I’ve ever met was my grandfather. He had an incredible ability to connect across generations and social circles, effectively building relationships wherever he went.
It always amazed me how he brought his network together to collectively share in the best of each person’s talents, skills and abilities. (And, something I believe that I do today with ease — after a lot of practice.)
Because of my grandfather’s involvement in dozens of fraternal organizations (if you read my story about St. Patrick’s Day then you’ll know that the Hogan’s was one of them), my sister and I enjoyed participating in countless Easter egg hunts every Spring. (Secretly, I wish they had them for adults. Yep, I’d be all over that.)
My grandparents would take us from place to place with our multi-colored straw baskets that each had a big floppy pink bow tied to the handle for our annual quest to win a top prize- the big chocolate Easter bunny.
I received many life lessons from my grandfather including how to be a powerfulconnector, build relationships, and grow a strong network to ultimately win the big prizein my personal and professional life. (Yea, I’ve got a pretty great life….)
As a child, my grandfather’s network made it possible for me to win the prize that was most important in my life at the time.
Today, my own network opens doors of incredible opportunity for me so that I can live out my life’s passion and teach individuals how to create strong networks that willingly open doors of possibility on their own leadership journey.
ACTION ITEM: The Upside Challenge this week is to identify what big prize you want to win within the next 30 days. (What is the BIG chocolate Easter bunny in your personal and professional life?)
