Most of my childhood memories involve my grandmother and grandfather.
I spent lots of time at their house and was greatly influenced by their likes and dislikes.
Something I remember well was gearing up for the Olympic Games.
My grandmother would talk about it weeks before the opening ceremony.
She loved the energy, the competition, and the great variety of sports.
One of her favorites was ice skating and ice dancing competitions.
And, this year, she would have been in awe by American ice dancing couple, Meryl Davis and Charlie White.
They walked away with the Gold Medal and were the 1st Americans to win in this category. What’s even more amazing is that they received the highest score ever recorded in this category!
But, that’s not why my grandmother would have been in awe.
Oh sure she would have been impressed by their ability to “get it right”, be “technically perfect”, and create a powerful emotional connection, making it seem as if they created the music by being together on the ice.
But, my Grammy would have been in awe because she was a passionate woman who loved to listen to people’s personal stories of triumph.
When I would walk home from Holy Spirit School, she would share countless wonderful stories about the odds that each Olympian had to overcome to get there.
She would have been in awe that Meryl Davis and Charlie White had been skating together for 17-years after their Moms matched them up at a local skating rink in Michigan.
And, with my grandmother there’s always an inspiring message….Meryl Davis was diagnosed with dyslexia in 3rd grade and struggled with reading until 11th grade. Then she made the National Honor Society and graduated from high school with honors.
She could have let her dyslexia get in the way of her success. But, she didn’t.
She could have cried out, “I can’t.” Or, “Why me?” But, she didn’t.
She worked hard, overcame the odds, made the National Honor Society – and took home the Gold Medal in perfect form like no one has ever done before.
ACTION ITEM: The Upside Challenge for the week is to examine what is holding you back from your own Gold Medal. What are you letting get in the way of what you want?
What got you here won’t get you there.
