She hired me for coaching because she knows that in order to be a big fish in a small pond, she needs to position herself differently.
However, when we started to do the work that would get her back on track, she started to push back.
She said that if she started to promote who she was people would think she was salesy, sleazy, or just plain cheesy.
One of the biggest misconceptions in leadership is assuming that your work stands for itself.
It doesn’t.
People need to be told again and again who you are and what makes you so special.
Think about Oprah.
Do you think she advertised her television show because she thought that millions of people out there didn’t know who she was?!?
Wrong.
Do you think she had extra-large billboards with her face plastered on it because she is self-centered?
Wrong again.
She understands the power of positioning and how it affects getting what you want.
And, all of this is about leadership.
Leadership is influence, nothing more and nothing less.
You’ve got to lead people to you with a clear powerful message.
I’m all about big, bold, and brilliant.
For years, I worried about being too bossy or too much and I forgot everything I know about leadership.
When I finally found my way back, I embraced the fact that there will always be people who will love me, people who hate me, and people who think I’m just plain okay.
But, the people who love me — my people — were waiting for me.
And, your people are waiting for you if you would say “yes” to stepping up into a bigger, bolder, and more brilliant version of yourself.
I’m not suggesting you be something you’re not but I am letting you know that when you hide your gifts, your talents, and your superpowers, the world suffers.
