3 Must-Have Practices to Energize Your New Year

It’s been nine (9) years and (5) days since I said “Yes!” to the question “Will you marry me?”
My husband proposed the day after Christmas in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City and less than a year later, we stood at the altar in Allentown, Pennsylvania, promising to love and cherish each other in sickness and health, in good times and bad. (At the time, I didn’t realize the scope of that statement.)
Our “happily-ever-after” celebration brought loved ones from miles away.
And, today, eight (8) years later, I’m fortunate that there have been more ups than downs, more highs than lows, and more abundance and gratitude than I ever imagined
Sure, we faced health challenges, family crisis, and weathered a few storms together, but it’s been minor in the grand scheme of our beautiful life together.
I was someone who had never planned on getting married, and Jim was a welcome surprise in my life – firmly rooted in living out that are where you choose to be and it is your choices, commitment and discipline that got you where you are and where you want to be.
Yes, Jim is someone who possesses solid values and a strength of character that I admire and lean on often. I never question the choices we’ve made, our commitment to be together despite our long absences and conflicting traveling schedules, and the discipline we each possess as we focus on our individual interests while building our relationship.
And, all of this isn’t just a lovely story about my life; it relates directly to leadership.
When you assume the role of being a leader, you may be unaware of what’s around the corner, and yet you are still called to blaze a trail.
When you assume the role of being a leader, you may have things happen that you never planned or dreamed you’d have to face.
When you assume the role of being a leader, you must make the choice and commitment to stay the course regardless of all that may be happening around you.
And, along the journey, you must possess the discipline to do what is right regardless of what “everyone else is doing” as you encounter obstacles, face problems, and welcome larger-than-life opportunities… Yes, there will be huge wins and mega-losses. Profound disappointments and amazing joys. And, it’s all a part of the leadership journey.
The lesson for today is short and important.
If you want to be a superstar leader in your personal and professional life, if you want success in business and at home, if you want 2013 to be your best year yet, it all starts with leadership.
