I’m all about leadership.
It’s what I believe matters most both to have a truly successful and meaningful personal and professional life.
See, if you lead well, you will succeed with great aplomb. Guaranteed.
In John Maxwell’s book, The 21 Habits of Irrefutable Leadership, he spoke about the Law of the Lid.
Ultimately, what this translates to is that no matter how motivated or driven you are, if you are not a skilled leader, you will fail.
In my own work and research in the field of leadership, I’ve discovered 7 Pillars of Leadership Success, which are in alignment with Maxwell’s 21 habits.
In Pillar #5, The Power of Presence, one of the pieces I speak about is how leaders understand the power that comes from their story.
Yes, your individual story is a goldmine.
In whatever field you work, in whatever work you do, your work is all about YOU.
You are unique. And, your personal brand should communicate that.
And, yes, you have a brand.
We all have a brand.
Some people have big shiny brands. Some people have watered down brands. And, others are still searching for what they stand for.
Know that the world belongs to those who stand out, not those who try to fit in.
The world belongs to those who blaze a trail, not those who try to have a “xerox” or “me, too” life.
When you remember to share your individual story, your ideal clients, colleagues, and the people who matter know precisely why they must work with you — and only you.
Best of all, you get to talk about your work, and/or your services in a way that feels comfortable and natural.
And, because leadership is influence, the people who resonate with you and hear your story will want to follow you – to the ends of the earth.
Years ago, I realized not everyone is comfortable with my willingness to be open and frank.
But, I am clear that my story (which is sometimes painful to tell out loud) is what makes me who I am, which is why I am willing to take the risk of offending others at times.
Before I head out to blaze another trail, let me leave you with the following questions to ponder:
Do you know what your story is – and how you can use it to influence others? If not, what will you do about it?
Do you know what is your brand worth? If so, how much? If not, what will you do about it?
Have you been settling for a “me, too” life? If so, what will you do about it?
And, if you’re not happy with what you’ve written so far, turn the page – and begin anew.
Today is your day.
Say “No” to a comfortable life. And, say “Heck, No!” to a “Me, too.” life.
And, remember, life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely. Choose Upside.
