Well, I’m sitting in a café in Barcelona, Spain, off on another fabulous vacation with my loving and supportive husband Jim.
I was thinking about how in the world I got here – to this space and time in my life.
I mean if you look at my story, you might say that I had a natural excuse to fail or at least not to be living the life I live.
Statistically speaking, my socio-economic background should have limited my social status and opportunities. (Not to mention I was a big dork in school.)
Fortunately, I was raised with a strong work ethic and with my Mom’s constant pushing (she dropped her not-so-motivated daughter – me – off at the mall when I was 16 and told me not to come home until I got a job), I got a great education and the personal drive to succeed.
I take A LOT of time off (usually a vacation every six weeks) and am keenly aware of what my Fab 4 priorities are – Fun, Freedom, Flexibility, and Family!
Everything I do throughout the day is centered on these priorities – and I want you to have the same rich harvest for your life, whatever your priorities are.
Here are three strategies to ensure you’re growing your life’s priorities:
1) Think about what you’re doing. Do you “spend” your time or “invest” your time? Are the actions you’re taking intentional or have you simply gotten into a pattern of doing things a certain way?Do you know your fab 4 priorities?
Action: For one week, write down the list of tasks you do. On the eighth day, examine the list and ask yourself, “Are these really my life’s priorities?” “Will these tasks help me get to where I want to go today and in the future?” If not, make a change!
2) Think about how you’re doing it. When I was single, I spent most of my weekends cooking, cleaning and running errands. I was often exhausted on Monday morning and glad to get back to work. Now, I try to accomplish everything between Monday and Friday. For example, when I’m in town, Jim and I head to Costco to do our shopping on a Friday night. Why? The store is less crowded then, plus we free up more precious time to spend together over the weekend.
Action: Is there a better way of doing the things you’ve decided are your life priorities?
3) Think about why you’re doing it. As you go through your day, are you aware of why you do what you do? Whether you like it or not, every action is a life priority.
Action: Throughout the next 24 hours, as you perform every task, at work and home, ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” “Is this a fair exchange of my talents, gifts, skills and abilities?” “Will doing this get me closer to where I want to be?”
Mahatma Gandhi stated, “Action expresses priorities.”
Once again, what is it that you really want, and are you willing to do what it takes to get there?
