Your big vision is a key to success – so you’ve got to start with a written plan, beginning with the end in mind. Are you casting a small or big one?
Years ago, I decided to research business failure.
It may sound like a crazy topic to research, however, I’m always seeking ways to learn and grow and thought it would benefit both myself and my clients if I had a better understanding of why 90% of all business ventures started to fail within the first 5 years.
In researching business failure, I expected the reason to be lack of capital or resources, or marketing – and what I discovered was that it was vision.
Yes, vision.
What further astounds me is how the answer has been right in front of me all along as I’ve heard countless women speak about how they struggle with thinking big – and their biggest challenge may be thinking too small.
Yet, I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that this ties back to leadership as the majority of issues in business do.
During a recent client leadership retreat day/VIP day, I challenged one of my clients to think REALLY big.
It was a struggle for her to marry up her countless ideas with what she thought was possible.
I witnessed this incredibly articulate woman stumble over her words, trying to reconcile her thoughts and speak what she wanted out loud.
She caught herself – and then just laughed, acknowledging that the opportunities she saw didn’t match her vision.
We had a long conversation about why this happens.
No one brags about being a small thinker, so why is it a struggle to give yourself permission to dream big?!?
For some people, perhaps you, the answer may be similar to the personal battle I shared in my webinar on goal-setting secrets.
When I first opened Upside Thinking, Inc., I never created big goals or cast a big vision so that I didn’t have to feel like a failure or that I let myself down.
If I didn’t aim high, I didn’t have to feel bad about myself.
Looking back, I can see this was crazy-making.
I kept myself small – and then would beat myself up for not fully using my gifts, abilities, talents and expertise.
What a terrible cycle of abuse and self-loathing, just because I was afraid I would fail.
Sigh.
The good news is I now recognize that getting ½ way (or more!) to a big goal is better than surpassing an uninspiring one.
So, I’ve learned to give myself permission to dream big – and create a written plan, starting with the end in mind.
And, the people who I’m called to serve aren’t missing out.
This week, I’m giving you permission to do the same.
In just a few days, January 25th, I will step on stage at Design Your Destiny Live and this will be the 1st pillar I will share.
Your big vision is a key to success – so you’ve got to start with a written plan, beginning with the end in mind.
The world is waiting for you.

The Upside Challenge of the week is to identify where you’ve cast too small of a vision for your talents. Choose to cast a bigger vision – one that both scares and inspires you.
Remember, comfort doesn’t change the world.
Vulnerability…changes everything.
So, share your big vision with me – and everyone you meet this week.
The world needs you and your brilliance.
