How to maximize the 24 hours we’re given? Even with Bright Shiny Object Syndrome, it’s possible to manage your 24 hours with effectiveness.
Do you suffer from B.S.O or Bright Shiny Object Syndrome?
Do you have countless ideas that you are excited to explore and find that 24 hours just isn’t enough time to accomplish everything?
While one of your greatest strengths may be exploring new ideas, the willingness to be open to trying new things can also get in the way of your success.
When you are pulled in many directions or haven’t clearly outlined your priorities, you risk efficiency for effectiveness.
Sure, you may get a lot of things done but if they aren’t the “right” things or what is most important to do so that you move forward with where you want to go, you could end up moving 100 things an inch vs. the three most important things for a mile.
In my 7 Pillars of Leadership, the 4th pillar of Live Your Priorities is one of the most challenged.
You get 24 hours a day.
No matter how talented you are, how much money you have in the bank, or how smart your kids are, you still get 24 hours a day.
And, you have a limited amount of energy to utilize during those 24 hours.
You need an ideal number of hours of sleep each night, and a healthy diet and exercise to ensure that you maximize the amount of energy you have during the day.
One of my favorite stories to best understand this is the story of the 100 seeds.
There once were two brothers (twins) who were each given ten seeds to plant during harvest time.
A severe drought went through the land and so the boys only had access to a limited amount of water each week.
One boy decided to plant all 100 seeds, however, because of the shortage he ended up only having enough water to water them once during the season.
The other boy decided only to plant ten seeds and ended up being able to water them ten times during the season.
Which boy produced a larger return on investment?
Which boy yielded a successful harvest?
Of course, the second one!
And, the same is true for you as you explore new paths for your career or business.
How To Maximize The 24 Hours We’re Given
If you try to act on 100 great ideas vs. starting out with 10, or 5, or 3, or 1, you will spend a lot of time doing things and may become incredibly efficient at getting things done.
But, you won’t necessarily get the right things done or live your priorities.
Action Item:
The Upside Challenge of the week is to identify what the #1 goal that you want to accomplish. Then, identify the one step that you must take to ensure that this happens.
The journey of 1000 miles starts with a single step.
Starting with the right step centered around your priorities matters.
The world needs you and your brilliance.
