A few weeks ago I was invited to speak at a women’s conference in Florida to an audience that wasn’t my typical audience of business professionals.
I said “yes” because the invitation came from a dear friend who believed that I was the right person for the topic.
The theme was fear and how it gets in the way of being our best self.
Many of the women in attendance were struggling with emotional issues, including mental illness.
A few days ago I got an email from my friend letting me know about one of the many miracles that occurred at the conference.
I facilitated a panel discussion and during the Q&A portion of our time, a young woman stood up and asked how she could get help for the man who was abusive to her.
Most of the people in the audience were in shock and the panelist who took her question was brilliant in his response, encouraging her to “get safe first “and “get help for her family immediately.”
She was surrounded by love and support from many in the audience who rushed to her side after the panel discussion. She was walked to the Women In Distress booth at the event and given additional resources for assistance.
I share this story today for several reasons —
1) You never know what doors will open for others when you say “yes” to a stretch opportunity for yourself. While I got rave reviews from my presentation, I received much more by being in the presence of those women.
2) You never know what the people you speak to or walk by today are encountering. Everyone has a story and goes through ups and downs. And, some people do an incredibly good job at hiding their struggles and pain. When you are fully present and appreciate people for who they are, not who you want them to be, you are open to receive gifts that turn into opportunities that have the ability to change your world.
And, this relates to positioning yourself as an expert because you’ve got to have a meaningful and memorable presence, the 5th Pillar in my 7 Pillars of Leadership. When you aren’t memorable, it’s tough to be the recognized expert. (smile)
ACTION ITEM: The Upside Challenge of the week is to think about what makes your work meaningful? And, what makes you memorable? If this is a struggle for you, what are you willing to do about it NOW?
The world is made for those who stand out, not those who fit in.
