Are You A Leader?

Because I preach and teach leadership, I’m always looking at it from different angles.
Right now, I’m on a trip to San Diego to speak to 150+ professionals at an Academic Resources Conference sponsored by California State University where I’ll be delivering the opening keynote about The Journey of Leadership and facilitating a breakout session on Meeting the Leadership Challenge. (And, the conference planner shared that they are sold out and had to contract with a 2nd hotel! Woo-hoo! I am soooo excited!)
When I first started Upside Thinking eight (8) years ago, I operated from the premise that everyone knew what leadership was and defined it just like I did.
Over time, I realized that the word leadership conjured up many different images and ideas for people and often times was a word that many people misunderstood.
So, I realize when I put this out there and ask, “Are You a Leader?“, your answer may be a definitive “sometimes”. (smile)
Leadership is about influence.
Each one of us has the power to influence each and every day – or not.
Whether you work in a corner suite, or cubicle in corporate America, are fighting for justice in the halls of government, run your own non-profit, or have built a thriving business, you NEED leadership.
Fortunately, as Vince Lombardi said, “Leaders aren’t born; they’re made. And, they’re made like anything else through hard work.”
Yes, leadership is a skill that can be developed and practiced.
And, being a leader begins with self-leadership.
So, maybe a better question to ask you is, “Are you able to lead yourself?”
Do you have a clear, written plan for your future?
Do you create bold and powerful action items that will enable you move three things a mile vs. 100 things an inch?
Do you follow through with excitement and enthusiasm?!?
To be an influencer, you need to be someone who makes things happen, motivates others, and steps up when opportunities present themselves.
Recently, I found myself challenged with a BIG vision for the new year. Am I crazy? Is it possible?
And, the answer is YES!!! With the right tools, the right team/support system, the right processes, I give it a HECK, YES!
I am someone who makes things happen, motivates others, and steps up when opportunities present themselves even if I don’t know how I’m going to get it done.
How about you?
Do you step out in front with your fabulous self or do you wait for others to make life happen for you?
Do you have the right tools, support, and processes to get you where you want to go five years from now?
Are you a leader or are you an achiever?!?
The Upside Challenge for this week is to take my 7-day challenge of examining how you’re spending your time. As you move throughout the day, are your actions self-led or directed by someone else – your spouse’s vision, your employer’s, your family’s expectations? If you find that you are taking actions because of someone else’s vision for your life, what are you going to do to step up and step out into your own vision, and lead to succeed?
Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely. Lead Upside.
